I have had no end of problems with Vista Ultimate and my microphone. I am at the point of returning to Microsoft XP pro.
So, a month ago, I installed Vista ultimate and my sound worked fine. Then one week ago, my mic just stopped working and as a gamer that is a huge loss.
Now, before you say anything, I have tried everything under the sun.
What everything boils down to, is that vista does not recognize my sound card or my mobo jacks. I have tried a new headset. I have tried every combination of vista settings, TS settings, vent settings, sound card settings and nothing works.
Currently, I have the latest drivers for my Creative X-Fi extrememusic sound card installed. I have vista recording devices set to default mic with sound all the way up. I have vent set for direct sound from my mic jack on my sound card. But vista doesn't recognize the jacks and thus no one can hear me.
Any advice?
I have no idea what to try now.

I wish I could help, but I am having the same problem and am looking for an answer. However, I am not convinced it is Vista. I'm wondering more if it's the sound card - or a default setting somewhere. My mic worked for a while, then stopped. And it works on other computers and I"ve tried a few mics. It's the mic jack that I'm using for this (the line in). My webcam has a built in mic (USB) and it works fine.
Anyone have any suggestions?
