I'm doing a POC to assess the usability of Modeling projects in our process. To do this, I mocked up a simple activity diagram, and then attempted to open & work with various other versions of VS since not everyone has an ultimate license and we want to know how those privileged assets will behave in a mixed license world.

The experiment met with difficulties earlier than expected though when VS 2012 Premium succeeded in opening the diagram, yet showed a blank design surface instead of the diagram contents. Then, even more to our surprise, even VS 2012 Ultimate was unable to display the contents of the diagram that it itself created. This is what appears when opening the diagram:

However, in both editions of VS 2012, the UML Model Explorer pane succeeds in displaying the contents of the diagram, shown here without identifier names.
