Hi everyone,

We have SharePoint 2013 and we have two servers running Excel Calculation Services. We haven't customized the cache location, so its using the default Temp location on the system drive. My question is - as we are running the service on both the machines, should the workbook cache be stored on both the machines? The workbook cache size is set to default settings that will take 40 GB. Once this fills up, the users are unable to open the workbooks any more. Is there a configuration setting that will help us clearing the old cache to free up the space, like the trace logs settings ? On a side note, we are using Workbook URL as the load balancing option.

Hi Srikanth,

Please check if you have set the local file system location of the workbook file cache in CA->Manage service applications->Excel Service Application->Global Settings->Workbook Cache. No value indicates that a subdirectory in the system temporary directory is the location of the workbook file cache. It means that when you open a workbook in Excel Services, a temporary file is stored in the %TEMP% folder of the application server that is running Excel Services.

As you have two servers running Excel services, the two servers both should have the temporary file until you configure workbook file cache location.

For this issue, if you don't configure workbook file cache location in your farm, you can check ULS log to find if there is anything about this issue when you open a workbook using Excel services.
