The bytes in a sound file are going to be arranged differently and mean different things in each different type of sound file. Here are a few links you can start at to learn a little about the common .wav format. I am not sure exactly how you can do this but, i imagine you will need to read the wave file header so you can get the info about the wav format to start with. This will require you to know and understand how to use quite a few API functions which can be difficult even for an advanced programer.
