Has anyone developed a CSR script to display an existing custom list (not promoted links) as a set of tiles much like promoted links?

We have an existing SharePoint List that is used to list a set of active projects.  This list is used as a lookup site column for a number of content types so I don't really want to change this list to a promoted links list.
