Hello - I'm a SharePoint user and not familiar with SharePoint server set up.  We are using SP2013 out of the box and we don't want to enter code.  I would like to connect Sharepoint to a table created by a sql query of sales by salesrep that has 54,000 items. I'm aware of the 5000 item threshold and the views we would be using for each salesrep would be less than 5000.  The IT department says it will take 10 hours to download the data from this one table into SharePoint.  We asked a SP consultant and we were told that custom code is needed. I have seen videos and read articles like a Microsoft article, "How to: Create external content types for SQL Server in SharePoint" about creating a SharePoint list from external data and it looks like a straight-forward setup but there seems to be a disconnect between the linked article and reality.  I'd like to know if the disconnect is occurring because the article isn't providing all the information or if the IT department is not understanding the process.  Please understand I'm looking for your experience with situations like this.  Is it unreasonable to populate a SP2013 list from a table created by a sql query that contains 54,000 items?

Hi Create- you certainly don't need custom code for that. May I ask why you want to bring it into a SP list? There's no need to. You can use BCS to display a view in SQL.
