Does anybody know why a number of results in some of my search terms are not showing in the details and therefore not highlighted?  If I open the document, that term is in there.  In my examples, they are all .docx

Do you mean that the correct documents are returned when search with keyword, however the keyword is not highlighted?

I recommend to check if the crawled properties for the keywords are added into the ExcludeFromSummary managed property in SharePoint Search service application.

If yes, then the keyword will not be displayed in the Hit Highlighted Summary.
