We have been using a custom web part for about 10 years. I dusted off VS and updated it for our SP 2013 migration (we are a bit behind the times). I don't have access to the servers, but was on the phone with the admins. They took the new WSP file and installed it, but the old web part was still in use on the sites. The web part is an upgrade to the existing version. The GUID is the same, the name is the same.

On my development server, the web part deploys from Visual studio with no issues. There aren't any errors from the PowerShell install on the production server. From PowerShell everything looks great. However, the web part in use on the sites is not updated. I verified this by viewing the source of the page. A variable that was removed is still in use on the site. Checking in "Web Parts" under settings shows that the new version was in fact installed.

The only other seaming clue is that I was unable to detect an IIS reset from my location. I was refreshing the site, and did not get the 20 or so second delay typical of a IIS reset. The administrator was accessing the server remotely and was unable to verify if an IIS Reset ran.

Did you keep the solution id?

From my understanding, you need to update the solution(.wsp) and the admin need to install the solution. (replacing the old WSP, there is still one WSP for that.)
