My SharePoint 2016 site is down- I have checked app pools and they are all started

I made changes to the web.config file in the hopes it would display some useful information but all I get is Server Error in '/' Application. Very frustrated running down all these hopeless leads in TechNet. Please help?

Check the Event Log 'Application' for ASP.NET Warning events. You can get the detail there without modifying the web.config.
