We are new to the Azure Site Recovery and I have been looking for a good diagram that explains the what process are involved in the initial protection of Vmware VM's ?

Having found nothing of great detail i start using Procmon to try and follow the process.  Here I what I think is going on, can any add more details or correct my interpretation of the steps.

1. Protection is started on Azure, Job is create. sub tasks can be monitored  by getting the job details.

2. On our VM's we pre-isntalled the Mars and Mobility agents, We the VM gets the replication. job a few process start on the protected VM

Client Side :

MARS ( Azure Backup )  = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Azure Recovery Services Agent\bin

Cbengine.exe

 

Mobility Agent ( InMage )  =         C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Azure Site Recovery\agent

Dataprotection.exe ( does initial copy of the disk ?)

S2.exe  ( Realtime replication ?)  connected to Configuration (OVA server)  cxps.exe on process server 9443

At the start of the replication,  dataprotection.exe  seems to take a copy of the disk at it send GBs of data to the provisioning server.  This process is not throttled so it uses the full server bandwidth.

Dataprotection.exe  is using a cmd line parmaters of  "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Azure Site Recovery\agent\dataprotection.exe"  source fast "{3442838081}" "C:\db1e99b2-2821-xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx\{34xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx}" "3" "0"

I was wondering if the volume shadow copy service is used to take a "snapshot of the disk’s" I can find no trace of this ?

After about 20 min this activity dies down then we just see S2.exe send what might be the real time replication.

I was expecting to see cbengine.exe  do the bulk of pushing data to the Provisioning server but it only seems to connect the Azure Cloud and Provision server only sending metadata.

MARS ( Azure Backup )  = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Azure Recovery Services Agent\bin

Cbengine.exe

 

Mobility Agent ( InMage )  =         C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Azure Site Recovery\agent

cxps.exe

The Cxps.exe process seem to be receiving data from the S2.exe process on the client and perhaps the dataprotection.exe process.

The data is written to disk and "Processed"  then  cbengine.exe uploads it all to the Azure storage blob.

I this accurate ?
