I don''t know as it is not permitted to be done.

But I may have a few suggestions. First remove any unnecessary external hardware when updating as it might be one of the peripherical that prevent the upgrading to be done.

I have saw a case where the installation on Windows 7 has failed because of an external hard drive. The installatin bagan but at some point, the installation was cancelled and the system roll back to the previous OS (which was Windows XP).

If you can find a way to do an upgrade, then if it fails, the system will probably automatically roll back to Vista.

On the other hand, if the upgarde does not works on your system, then depending on the reason it might not works anyway even if you start from a formatted hard drive.

Have you check if your system is compatible with Windows 7 using Microsoft tool for that?
