Important note: file extension is the attribute a file in FAT file system; there are no extensions on NTFS, but the file naming schema mimicking extensions does exist; used to denote "file types" used by Shell. In all modern file systems a file can contain (almost) any number of ''.'' characters, followed by characters or not, etc.

At the same type, there are not reliable file type signature inside files; any file can contain anything. Practice shows that all that matter is not too much important.

The question is not formulated correctly. Probably it means converting file type. If so, the question lacks certain subject as too general.
