First question, why do you want to be a web designer while currently working as a web developer? IMO It''s like going backward or something. Currently what type of projects you are working now? ASP.NET? php? or what?

In my opinion, to become a Web designer, you need to be both: a software developer and the Artist. Did you get a decent school of drawing, painting, familiar with industrial design, human visual perception and cognitive science in general? You will need all that to be a real designer. You need serious school in arts, real education and training.

To be an artist is the key here. Many "designers" are not even close to that, but… who needs them? Most sites are hard to view without pain in the eyes.
