Whatever you do, expect to use huge disk space. The video format is not a simple question. There are at least two separate relatively independent levels: format of the container and the format of compressed video stream. You can combine them, with some limitations.

I''m not sure you will be free in your selection of formats. If you deal with video clips submitted by the users, you will need to re-compress it to your requirements. It can takes hours and hours.

It''s very hard to estimate how much disk space you need for a video with acceptable quality.
