I am looking into getting a website built. It will be a penny auction. But as I got into the planning of things, I heard that ASP.net will perform fast and be more secure then PHP.

My Answer: ASP.NET: More secure, can build rich apps more easily and a lot of boilerplate functionality comes available (user management via the providers, bilingual support) out the box and is much more maintainable than PHP (at least the PHP I''ve seen).
There is also a lot of back-end stuff available (such as ORM mappers) as well.

The performance depends highly on the implementation.

This is all my experience, YMMV. I''ve been an ASP.NET dev (on and off) for nearly 10 years now, I''ve written one PHP website and it just feels much more "hacked together" but again this is my opinion , other viewpoints will differ.
