'ngInject'; does nothing by itself, it's just a string literal. A tool called ng-annotate uses it as a flag : if a function starts with 'ngInject';, it will be processed by ng-annotate.

angular.module("MyMod").controller("MyCtrl", function($scope, $timeout) {
    "ngInject";
    ...
