We are using master project and sub project for our scenarios. And we found that if the sub project is updated and published, the master project is not updated. For example, the Work hours is updated in sub project, but the Work hours in master project is not updated, and we have to open the master project and republish the master project to get those fields updated in the master project.

if you work with master and subprojects and if you only publish the subprojects, the master project will not be updated automatically. In addition you have to republish the master too. There is no configuratio in Project Server for automation.
