This is correct. You cannot connect a load balancer to multiple availability sets. The point of combining a load balancer to a AV set is so the LB can direct traffic between the VMs in that AV set for high availability. All VMs in an AV set should function together hence load balancing between multiple AV sets just does not make sense.

You can instead not use an AV set and direct traffic from the load balancer to individual VMs.
