When I exported to Excel from one site and imported the Excel file to create a new list in another site, the new list has "1" appended to the name of the default columns, for example:  ID1, Created1, Created By1, etc.  Can anyone tell me if there is a way to avoid this?  I tried to edit the field name but I got an error message about the field name already existing.

Per my test, It is a by designer behavior. 

When we  export to Excel, there will be some columns displayed in the excel file, such as ID, Created, Created By, etc.  

When we import the Excel file to create a new list, the columns in the excel (ID, Created, Created By, etc) will be created in the new list, since the ID, Created, Created By columns are already existing in the new list, So the columns in the excel (ID, Created, Created By, etc) will be displayed as (ID1, Created1, Created By1, etc) in the new list. 

You can modify view to display the correct ID, Created, Created By for the new list.
