This not how you will learn; forget your project for now and learn.
Learn Java, learn how to build Java apps, start with console, then GUI.
Find some tutorials and follow them, do as many exercises as possible.
When you are at home with those topics, analyze your bulb project, get documentation on what is specific and learn it, then building the app should not be too complicated.
