For a number of documents, we store them in a central repository and use the "Link to a Document" content type to place the document in various locations. This ensures that when the document is removed or updated, it removes or updates all locations.
Our organization uses OneDrive and many sync to the document libraries that have the "Link to a Document" document. The issue is, these appear as .aspx files instead of the original file type (pdf, excel, doc, etc.) and therefore, cannot open them.

Did the issue occur in SharePoint 2013?
Per my test in my SharePoint 2013, I create a document library and add the "Link to document" content type. Then sync to onedrive, they are the .aspx file type.
We can edit the properties of the item like the picture below. The file type is .aspx. So when you sync to onedrive, the "Link to a Document" document displays as .aspx file.
It is by design.
The workaround of the issue, we can open the aspx file in the notebook, find the url of the original document and copy the URL in the browser.
