I am working with a website which makes document files available to download/view.
A button redirects to a URL - http://<server>/<folder>/<file>.doc
In Firefox this results in a dialog offering me the option to open the file in Word or to save it locally, which is ideal behaviour.
In IE11 (on Windows 7 or 8) and Edge (on Windows 10) the file content is displayed as text.
However, If I type a local filename into the address bar I get the Open / Save / Save as dialog that I would also expect in this circumstance,
How can I (or the website developer) persuade IE11 and Edge to give this dialog for a file coming from the website.
Note: The issue applies equally to .doc, .docx and .ppt files.

f12>Networking tab, click the "Start" button to record your browser requests and responses. Return to your web page(without closing the dev tool) and click the download link/button.
examine the response header from your download link.... I expect that it is text/plain, which is incorrect.
open your IIS console and select the mime-types icon, and adjust its settings for mime-types for doc and docx files.
MSIE browsers use ActiveX controls to open office documents. (ensure that AcitveX filtering is not turn on, and that Tools>Manage Addons>Show all addons, they are enabled), Edge will prompt to download the file to the users' Edge download cache from where it can be opened with the native Reader Store app.
You can use Enterprise mode with Win10, 7, and 8 to ensure that navigation to intranet sites that have legacy and ActiveX dependencies are only opened with IE11.
