Hows does Visio label Shape Names?

I am seeing multiple objects with the same shape name (ex. 3 circles we pulled from our stencil, will have the same name AKA= Shape Name: 22). We would like to use Shape Names as the unique identifier for the work we are doing, but Visio is not generating unique Shape Names per object..

Is there a problem in how we set up the stencil? If shape name is never truly unique, IS there a unique identifier? (Note: the Shape ID has many duplications as well...)

Generally, the Shape ID is a unique identifier for the Visio drawing. Please do the following setting for your drawing:

Go to Developer tab, in the Hide/Show group, select the checkbox next to Drawing Explorer. In the window, expand the page and shapes, check if there is any duplicated shape ID. 

Additionally, we can view the ID of a Shape with the following steps:

1. Select a shape in a drawing window.
2. On the Developer tab, in the Shape Design group, click Shape Name.
3. The ID of the shape is listed at the top of the Shape Name dialog box.
4. You can also enter a name in the Shape Name dialog box to rename it.
5. Click OK.
