We have a WPF project that was originally created using VS 2015. I've branched the project in order to upgrade it to VS 2017 and add some newer functionality. We use TFS 2015 on premise for our builds and deployment. So, first question is, will TFS 2015 build an app that is a VS 2017 app?

Second question, assuming the answer to the first question is yes, does that mean we have to have VS 2017 on the build server? The WPF app still uses .NET 4.5.2.

We were able to upgrade our solutions from VS 2015 to 2017 and keep our TFS 2015 build server with no problem.  It is when you try to use .net 4.6+ or c# 6.0+ that you may run into issues.  From what I have read it should work, but I have not had luck yet.  This post is for TFS 2017 but it may help you once it is worked through.
