Hi,

in our weekly tracking cycle we ask our resources to report on 2 fields:

1. Actual Work
2. Remaining Work

we do not want to use the automatic calculation by MSP (Remaining Work = Previous Remaining Work - Actual Work), but would like the remaining work to keep it's previous status and have the resources manually update the remaining work.

otherwise we experience activities closed automatically when the resource reports more then the planned work.

Is there a way to configure MSP in such way?

While updating at the assignment level; if you enter Actual Work which is greater than Work, then Project sets Work to Actual Work, and Remaining Work to zero (if you do not enter remaining work!) and completes the assignment (% Work Complete = 100%) based on the formula Work = Actual Work + Remaining Work. There is no setting to prevent Project from updating the Remaining Work field.

When all the assignment are complete, both %Work Complete and % Complete at the task level will be 100%. Although I do not understand the reason why you cannot obtain estimates on the remaining work along with the actual work, I would suggest you to uncheck the option "Updating Task status updates resource status" in the Schedule tab of the Project Options dialog box. Thus, % Complete at the task level will not change while you update the actual work even when % Work Complete shows 100 percent.
