Apparently you get ponints for blog posts, code contriubtions and then number of "downloads" you make?

 I'm not sure i understand the relevance of blogging or downloads to forum reputation.

They are bundling contributions/participation outside the forum into this system, so for people whose main or sole activity is the forum, they won't mean anything.  It can make some sense - contributing code snippets that get downloaded from the Gallery, for example - but beyond that it's less obvious.
