This question has been bugging me for quite a while. we write the application on Window and web using the .net framework but "dot net" has a strong inclination towards web as the name suggests and that's unfair for a desktop application developers. To me, it's more of a Managed Application Framework.

Whatever the reason could be I am very curious to know the story behind it and why the name is stuck even today and didn't change.

Fair, makes sense that the class are organized the way done with the internet, but there is more to the .net framework than the organization of classes and I don't think it's the biggest feature of .net
