I'm trying to calculate work item's completion time. How can i calculate it's duration between in progress and done?

Any ideas on what i can try?

Thank you for posting here.

TFS is not intended to be a time tracking tool. The way TFS tracks time is very hard to use when you have a highly collaborative team, it would require you to create tasks for each person contributing to a task or constant re-asssigning of tasks to track the correct time spent.

If you still want to track time, then try a tool like Imaginet Time Sheet can extend TFS in ways that make it a lot easier to track time against any work item. And another time sheet extension (TX Chrono is free for teams of up to 4 users) for TFS to keep track of actual time spent vs. estimated time.

You could also try to query the work item history with the TFS API and check the timestamps on when the state transitions occurred.
