As a member in Cost Center Team, I would like to figure out the cost of using TFS server with 2 scenarios:

1. Say, our company currently purchases 100 MSDN licenses for developers who needs to use Visual Studio to develop .NET codes. If we decide to start using TFS, do we need to pay additional cost for TFS server alone?

Regarding to the cost for users, I would imagine that those 100 developers will be covered? Do we need to pay more MSDN just only for TFS? What about for other users that need to get information in and out of TFS, do we need to pay extra for them? (There will be some users only need to read information from TFS such as workitems and there are others will need to update workitem or using build or checking some documents to TFS? How do we pay for them? What does the CAL license comes into place?)

Are there other hidden costs that not cover above?

2. In contrast, say we decide to start using TFS now and pay for all the cost in #1. After 5 years, if we stop using TFS, what do we save from any of the items in #1? How much do we save from TFS Server alone? Do we still need to pay for for the same amount of MSDN licenses at that time or we can decrease? (assuming, we still have the same number of .NET dev). What about other costs?

you get the information how many license you need but the costs for those licenses depends on your contract.

or contact your licensing specialist.

Short answer:

if you've an active MSDN subscription than you can install one TFS Server without additional cost - apart from OS licensing.

each user with MSDN subscription does have TFS CAL.

users who only needs access to work items can use the StakeHolder role which is free.

not using or stopping using TFS does not reduce the cost for MSDN subscription unless you can downgrade to a subscription which does not include TFS / TFS CAL.
