To configure the SharePoint site to trust and use the Contoso federation server

1. Log on to the CONTOSOSRV02 computer as CONTOSO\Administrator with "p@ssw0rd" as the user password.
2. Click Start, All Programs, Microsoft Federation Extensions for SharePoint and then Federation Utility for SharePoint 3.0.
3. For the Administrator Configuration file location browse to c:\inetpub\wwwroot\wss\VirtualDirectories\37101 and select web.config.
Note: SharePoint creates the administrator configuration folder with random number. In this case it was created in folder 37101. It might be different for you.
4. For the Security Zone select Extranet and then click Next.
5. For the Application configuration location, browse to c:\inetpub\wwwroot\wss\VirtualDirectories\docs.contoso.com443 and select web.config.
6. Fore the application URI, type in https://docs.contoso.com and click Next.
7. For STS federation metadata location type https://sts1.contoso.com and click Next.
8. On the next screen keep Disable certificate chain validation and click Next
9. On the next screen keep the No encryption option selected and select Next
10. Click Next again then the Finish. After you click Finish, it will take few minutes to configure.
11. Click OK once SharePoint site is fully configured.


I faced problem in the 7 th step. I got an error as :

ID 1016: Could not process the WS-Federation metadata document.
ID 1089: Error reading the WS-Federation metadata Document. Address https://sts1.contoso.com generated error Unable to connect to the remote server.
Address:
https://sts1.contoso.com/FederationMetadata/2007-06/FederationMetadat.xml generated the error Unable to connect to the remote server.


I need your help friends....

And one more thing...do all the 4 systems have to be windows server 2008 R2 and must use the Hyper-V manager feature to setup this lab.

I run windows server 2008 R2 on both of my servers and windows server 2008 enterprise on CONTOSOSRV02 and FABRIKAMSRV02.

Can you please check if your DNS is set up properly and that you can access the fed metadata document from sts1? You should be able to ping sts1.contoso.com and in a browser access that sts’s fed metadata.
