Hi All,
I am trying to upgrade TFS 2013 UYpdate 4 to TFS 2015 or TFS 2015 Update 2 but I get random success and failure.
My Staging: TFS 2013 Update 4, SQL Server Enterprise SP1 2012. DB is around 1+ TB.
I tried upgrading TFS 2015 Update 2 with and without PreUpgarde Tool.
1. Preupgrade tool works well and passes. Couple of times I encountered locking error but it got resolved when I re run the PreUpgrade tool. But after completion of Preupgrade, when I tried TFS 2015 Update2, I encountered the errors. I overcome with these 2 errors by deleting existing TFS website from IIS and running a command from cmd. So installation was successful. But TFS upgrade Wizard stuck on a step 403 out of 1147 and it got stuck for more than 25 hours so I stopped the wizard. Result is no successful upgrade.
2. I tried without Preupgarde and directly upgraded to TFS 2015 update 2. It was successful and took around 3 days.
3. I tried again on a staging without Preupgarde and directly upgraded to TFS 2015 update 2. It got stuck again for more than 24 hours. So I stopped the upgrade.
4. One of the instance of staging I was successful with preupgarde and then update of TFS 2015 Update 2.
5. I am trying again the similar scenarios.
Note: The staging servers are clone of production with enough space. Only change is service account change and DB, URLs change. I am even using reporting and analysis services which is backed up and restored
from production. All are on separate DB instance of staging and no link from production.
I am afraid to upgrade my production due to these reasons.
Could you please suggest me best way to upgrade? Should I try with Preupgarde tool or without?
Should I directly upgrade to TFS 2015 Update 2.1 now? or step by step?

That’s based on the requirement, we could use PreUpgrade tool to upgrade TFS and our TFS still online. So if you require your TFS online or just can offline for a short time, you should use PreUpgrade tool to upgrade, otherwise I think directly upgrade would be better.
The upgrade process may throw exception, as far as I know there isn’t the way to make sure the process must be succeed. We need to do with the exception according to the detail error message.

Since update 2.1 has been released, I think you could update to TFS 2015 update 2.1 directly.
