I've found a serious bug in Visual Studio 2017 whereby attempting to add nodes results in Visual Studio 2017 crashes. I've tried different project types to no avail. 
The error, if you attempt to debug is:
"An unhandled Microsoft .NET Framework exception occurred in devenv.exe [1120]"
I've DotNet ver 4.6.2 installed on a Windows 8.1 machine and have had no problems elsewhere.
The version is:
Microsoft Visual Studio Community 2017
Version 15.1 (26403.7) Release
Microsoft .NET Framework
Version 4.6.01590

I think this may be related to the VS framework being different than what is installed. Anyone know how to fix this?

Thank you for your feedback and I tested it on my side, got the same result as yours.

I followed this document: How to: Add Schema Set Search Result Nodes to the Workspace to test in my VS community/professional/enterprise 2017(version: 26403.7), I found VS 2017 crashed in the community and professional versions, so I reported this issue to the VS Product Team. Please have a look at this: VS community/professional 2017: Add Schema Set Search Result Nodes to the Workspace and VS crash, you can vote it or add the comment, then we need to waiting for response from the VS Product Team engineers.

BTW, I tested it in the VS enterprise 2017 with the same version and it works fine as below:
