And was trying to help do an upgrade to the latest version, do I have to install all CUs from 2014 ? Or is there a specific pack that I get that it will fully update SharePoint 2013 ? I was going to do April 2017 CU then April 2018 CU but not sure if there is an easy path. This is my very first upgrade/maintenance on a SharePoint environment

You need to install Service Pack 1 then you can update to any CU post-SP1. You only need to install SP1 + the target CU (e.g. May 2018).
