I am trying to get User Profile Service running on my SharePoint 2010 Dev environment, but I run into the issue that User Profile Service (on Service on Server page) will NOT start.

Here is what I did.

The server log (event viewer) and sharepoint log (ULS log) all just show a very generic error message, "Object
reference not set to an instance of an object."

ProfileDB/SyncDB/SocialDB are all created successfully with permission for the farm account. User Profile Service Application was created clean too from what ULS log can tell.

Ensure that the account you are running the service is a local administrator for the provisioning process.
This is normally the farm account which also runs the SharePoint Timer service. If it is not a local admin, you will need to restart the Timer service after you grant the correct permissions.
