I upgraded from XP to Vista; Office 2007 was installed before the upgrade. I have never been able to search in Outlook even though file search worked; the Indexing Service said indexing was complete, Outlook said 300-odd mails to index but no search results were returned. I don't use a PST - I connect to Exchange and use cached Exchange mode. I've never had the Exchange admin tools on here. I repaired Office, ran Office diagnostics, checked the classes Registry key, moved the index, rebuilt the index; no success. Finally I stopped the search service, deleted the whole index directory, rebooted, recreated it and copied in the two .TXT fles for the schema and gathering and left the indexer running overnight.

Now Outlook says it has about the right number of files to index, but as well as the 'search results may be incomplete' message I get 'Instant search encountered a problem trying to display search results. Modifying your query may resolve this problem'. If I search from the Start menu with the same query I get results from Outlook messages. Any suggestions?

Mary, could you please enable Outlook logging (Outlook->Tools->Options->Other->Advance Options->Enable Logging), restart Outlook and perform a search in Outlook and send us the log files from %temp%\Outlook Logging.
