I search for a "name" and the search results window shows 11 files, but not the one I'm looking for. So, I click on the check box that says "Include non-indexed, hidden, and system files (might be slow)". That should find MORE files if they exist, should it not?

But, instead of MORE files, the search results window ends up EMPTY. ZERO files! How can that be!? The "Location" is set to Indexed Locations.

so, I think, "well as long as you're totally crazy at this point, you might as well try something else". So, I UNCHECK the box and get the 11 files back on the results window. Then, I go to the Location dropdown and switch it to "Everywhere", which, accordiing to the indentation of "Indexed Locations" beneath "Everywhere" leads me to assume I'll get MORE files instead of less. NOT! I click on the Search button and I get an EMPTY search results list again!

I'm a developer using Microsoft tools. I've made a living on this stuff for 20+ years and I'm dumb-founded with Vista Search. I need to find files that Vista thinks I ought to keep my dirty mitts off of, apparently. So, early on I tried adjusting the search locations and file types. Something must have gotten set wrong because the whole computer OS got screwy after that. I'd cllick on Start > All Programs > SomeFolder and it would take EIGHT SECONDS to open that folder. Nothing would happen at first. After about 6 or seven seconds I'd get the spinning blue cursor and finally the folder would open. I'd restart the computer and the Start menu would work fine for a few hours then go screwy again.

I reset all of the Search stuff back to defaults and rebuilt the index. Still no joy. Then, one day, when the system was just SO poor I was on the verge of a complete computer rebuild, I ran System Restore. I only went back a couple days to clean out some recent junk but the whole OS started running almost as fast as I would expect it to run! It was magic. It was junk for months and a Restore to 3 days earlier cleaned it up to a point that it was almost like a new computer again.

Unfortunately, the Search is still bonkers and I can't get it working. What the heck is going on with Search? What can a I delete to get Search to do a complete RESET and start finding files again? (BTW: I'm running with UAC turned off - have been for ages - I couldn't handle the hand-holding stufff.)

And, while I'm on a roll, this new Search is the most confusing search tool I've ever used. The darn thing closes up the Advanced Search at the strangest times. Stop trying to THINK for me! I can close the da-n window when I want, I don't need a nanny. And the Simple search with two fields - what's with leaving that stuff up there when Advanced is open with duplicate fields? Which ones are which? Which ones should I use? Popping "name: someFileName" into the upper Simple box when I type something in the Name box just blows my mind. This is supposed to be EASIER!? It does not seem intuitive to me at all. What the heck is a poor novice user going to think? The old Wagging Dog was 100 times better at finding files than Vista Search is. This poor baby needs some major surgery.
