I have created a team site and have some shared resources in there (mainly document libraries). The writers must not be able to delete items in the main site but should be able to add items. My understanding of permissions is a bit thin... I was thinking that permissions are set <g class="gr_ gr_2484 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar multiReplace" data-gr-id="2484" id="2484">on</g> the doc library to either allow read-only or edit (which would allow them to delete), so if I set the main site doc library with read-only access (so they can view content for research etc) and create a subsite for each writer with non-inherited permissions, they could save their work to a doc library in their own subsite. If you want the external freelance writers to be able to work on the content without being able to delete it, you could create a custom permission level (for example, it could be named "Contribute without deletion") that will allow these contributors to add and edit content but not to remove existing content: read here to know how you can create a custom permission level.
