silly question, we are getting alerts, went to the insights resource looked for the alert and can't find the configuration in normal or classic... where else can someone look for alert configuration for failed requests?

In your Application Insights resource, you can go to "Configure" and select "Alerts".  If you're having difficulty finding your alert, the alerts are also visible in the portal by looking under "Monitor".  From there you can find alerts under "Alerts" and "Applications".  If you are still having trouble, I would double check the Action Group used when creating the alert (Manage action groups).
