When using excel Version 1810 (Build 11001.20074) Monthly Channel, I'm unable to signin to the datacatalog (Data -> Get Data -> Datacatalog search). The message I get is: "We couldn't find an account with that username".
When I use an older version of excel, Version 1803 (Build 9126.2295) Semi-annual Channel for instance I've no problem signing-in. What am I doing wrong here or is this a bug?

It might be an Excel bug, you can report it by going to the Help menu in the ribbon and clicking on the Feedback button. I have tested on the same Version 1810 (Build 11001.20074), and it works for me. I did see this deprecation notice:

Important: Data Catalog Deprecation Notice
Data Catalog capabilities in Excel and Power Query will stop working on March 4th, 2019. Users will be able to consume content already published to the Data Catalog until that date. However, starting on December 3rd, 2018, users will not be able to publish (share) new or updated queries into the Data Catalog. We recommend you download your shared queries so you can continue using them outside the Data Catalog beyond March 4th, 2019. You can download the full definition of your queries from the My Data Catalog Queries task pane, using the Open option for each of the queries.You may have already seen this but I thought I would share this out.
