I would guess, nobody knows future scope.

I my opinion, the concept of "big data" is somewhat artificial, based on some historical casualties and conflict of historical data management with present-day needs, not with fundamental issues. People just failed to foresee the requirements for volume and performance requirements which are practically important today, so the theory and architectural solutions were well behind the practical demand. At the same time, I feel that data/information science and practice needs another revolution. And your approach to career, perhaps too specialized, may only prevent keeping yourself ready for new times. But this is just my impression. I never met a person who successfully predicted development of technology.

So, getting professionally prepared for work in the field of big data would be very good, but it would be, by far, not enough. It's more important to look around and be competent in wide set of programming areas, especially programming fundamentals. Only then you can be better prepared for future.
