It's better to have BOTH. You NEVER stop learning stuff in this business. If you do, your skill set becomes outdated rather quickly.

Probably the formal education.

Remember, when you apply for a job, they can't see you, or talk to you - all they see is what is on your resume / CV. So the guy doing the recruiting gets to work and finds a large stack of resumes on his desk - first task: whittle that pile down to manageable proportions for interview. If you have no experience, and no qualifications, the chances of you surviving that first stage cull are remote because there is no evidence that you can do the job - all he has from you is "I read a book, and I'm really good at it", which is about as useful as a chocolate teapot. :laugh:

Besides that, formal education can really be a major advantage over books - a tutor can explain in different ways a concept that you are having difficulties with: a book can't, and he evaluates your code in ways that you won't when you do book based exercises.

Both approaches are much, much better than the approaches of "look at other peoples code and try to work it out" and "guess and see what happens" which some people seem intent on using though...:sigh:
