I wanted to create a workflow which is initialized daily that checks all the items in a list and if it finds an item whose end date is less than or equal to today, it would update the status field of the list item to ended.

Though this may be possible using a Workflow Delay, I suggest using either a SP Timer Job or a Console Application using CSOM to do this.

Point is if you use Workflow Delay you will have multiple instances of your workflow running in the background waiting for the End Date where Timer Job or Console Application will just run once per day and check which items needs to be updated.
