I don't usually use hard constraints, but this is an instance that I need to use a Must Finish On constraint. Project won't honor the Must Finish On constraint date. I get a message that states "Task xxx in (schedule name) cannot be completed in the time allocated because there is a scheduling conflict between this task and another one to which it is linked.  Try the following:

• Change the type of constraint on the successor tasks to As Soon As Possible or some other constraint that doesn't fix it to a specific date.
• Remove the link between conflicting tasks.
• Shorten the duration of one of the tasks.
• Change the start and finish dates of one of the tasks.
• If the task to which "task name" is linked is not constrained and it is a summary task, check the constraints on the subtasks".

The task in question has no predecessor, only a successor and the successor has no constraints.  I suspect that the task duration can't be shortened due to the max units and work associated with the task, so it pops up the above message, but wanted to see if someone else might have another suggestion.  Thanks in advance!

First, why do you *need* to use a "Must Finish On" constraint?  

Like you, I would normally never use use such a constraint. For those tasks that for business/political/logical reasons "must finish on" (or at least we must *try* to finish on since there are normally no guarantees in the life of projects) a date, I set the Deadline field for that task but still leave it unconstrained. Then when Project computes the schedule and if the computed date goes beyond the deadline, then Project will alert that fact. Then I would take action to change the schedule, still unconstrained, to get a computed schedule that shows the task being done before the deadline ... or get agreement to change the deadline.  

This approach avoids having to mess with the complexity you now have.
