I'd like to create something similar to the following graphic in Design. Any input on how to get started would be much appreciated - I'm pretty new, so the more basic the better. I've been using Design as more of a graphic design for print tool rather than for web. I know that's not necessarily what it's meant for, but in case my purpose helps anyone... Thanks in advance!

Hello! Nice pattern, could be useful for Christmas decorations!
If you need exactly that figure, you can import it and redraw it with the spline or the pen tools using the image as guide.

If you need to do something in that style, there are two things you need to know. First, how to make a spiral, because it is useful in those patterns, second, you can make a bunch of custom strokes to save you part of the work.

Spiral: with the polygon tool, draw a triangle. Use an high inner depth (like 60%) and an high twirl angle (like 400%). Use the scissor tool to separate just one of the six curved sides of this figure: You have your spiral.

Custom stroke: you can turn any path or group of into a custom stroke by selecting it and select in the menu Object-->Stroke-->New stroke definition. Once you have the stroke window open, it is very useful to select which areas of it must be anchored to the start of the stroke, and which to the end. You can use the lasso tool to select the parts to be anchored, then right click and you will find the anchor options in the context menu. (I will upload the strokes I used in the picture if you need them, or as I can).

Then, the final part: assemble the spirals and some arcs (you can easily make them using the scissor tool on a circle or ellipse), add some straight lines and some freeform swirls. Make one or more copies and use the reflect horizontal or vertical to mirror them. Once you have your basic pattern, you can select each part and assign it one of the custom strokes to turn your lines into more complex shapes. You can use CTRL+R to revert a stroke (swap the beginning and the end)

Once this is all done and you're happy with the results, you may want to select the whole thing and use the convert stroke to path from the menu to convert all the custom strokes to normal paths, so you can select borders, gradients and so on. (Using convert to path while viewing the drawing at an high zooming level may improve the convert process)
You may need to do some final cleanup. If there are too much borders, you can select everything and use from the manu Path operation-->Unite to avoid holes and overlappings. (If the figure is complex, I suggest to save you the file before using unite, it may occasionally crash if there are too many complex figures)

In the first picture: my custom strokes on the left (the shapes I've used to create them), with some example of their usage (applied to spiral, arc, spline)
In the second: an assembly of shapes, the same paths with strokes applied, the result after convert to path and unite.

Have fun!
