I now understand the workflow task list is a default list. I accidently deleted a column in this list and now my workflows don't work correctly. I tried to add it back, but I'm not getting something right.   Is there any way I can restore this list to the default (original)?

As far as I know there is no way to do that, unless you have a backup of the site the workflow is contained within: you could restore the site to revert it back to the statue it was prior to the change in the workflow's task list.
An alternative would be removing the workflow and recreating it.
