Been having a problem with workflows in our Sharepoint 2010 environment ever since a recent .net patch was installed on the front end web server. The fix was (partially) addressed in the link below.

The solution was to run a powershell script, but after running it, there was no change. Digging deeper, I noticed in the C:\inetpub\wwwroot\wss\Virtual directories, there were 3 folders. The entries the KB suggested were only updated in the web.config file in one of these folders. When I updated the other two, restarted IIS, and restarted Sharepoint 2010 timer servers, the workflow started working.

However, it only fixed one workflow. The other issue we are having is with our group request workflow which allows removal or addition of AD users to certain groups.

I figured the workflow would be an all or nothing scenario, but that does not seem to be the case. I fixed one workflow, but this other one is not working.

Any help is appreciated.

The November 2018 Cumulative Update for SharePoint 2010 fixes this issue "After you install the September 2018 .NET Framework security updates for CVE-2018-8421, some workflows that use the SharePoint 2010 Workflow platform type stop working". Check this article for more information.

Note: It is required to have SP2 installed for the base product and all installed language packs to install November 2018 CU for SharePoint 2010.
