There are a few recommended steps to be performed before upgrading to Vista. You can go to this page Windows Vista Migration Step-by-Step Guide for the steps.

To check whether specific applications are compatible with Vista, you can go to this page Windows Vista Compatibility Center and search for the particular application's compatibility status.

You could also use the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor tool to check whether your XP-based system can run Windows Vista. Here's the link Get Windows Vista: Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor

Generally most of the software should run fine on Windows Vista.
If the application does not run as expected then one can put the application in compatibility mode for "Windows XP Service Pack 2".
The steps to do this are:
1. Right click on the ".exe" file to be executed and click on Properties.
2. In the tabs present on the window that opens, click on the "Compatibility" tab.
3. Under the "Compatibility mode" box, check (tick mark) the box which says "Run this program in compatibility mode for:".
4. In the dropdown box under "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" choose "Windows XP Service Pack 2".
5. Click on "Apply" and then "OK" and try running the application again.
