I am working on two sharepoint on-premises farms; 2013 & 2016. and i want to start my first Apps/Add-in experience. now the first step will be to configure our environments to allow working with Apps. so i came across this article:-

but i am not sure about the DNS section (the steps under the "Configure the domain names in DNS (all hosting options)").

1. should those DNS settings be done inside the sharepoint server itself? or inside the DNS server which the sharepoint server run under it ?

2. what is the purpose of doing these DNS settings? i mean why using sharepoint apps require these DNS changes while for example creating new manage services (such as search, managed metadata, etc) or create new sharepoint applications does not require DNS changes?

3. in our case we have a test sharepoint server and a live sharepoint server. and both are installed inside the same domain and are accessible using the users' active directory usernames  .. so in this case we need to have 2 DNS zones ? one for live and the other for test ?

can anyone advice on the above 3 questions please? again i am using SP 2013 and SP 2016 on-premises.

1) DNS is configured on the DNS server.

2) To provide support for the Apps domain. This domain is unique in that it must have a wildcard to support the random hostnames that Apps are given by SharePoint.

3) Each farm must have a unique FQDN for their Apps domain. This could be *.contoso-apps1.com and *.contoso-apps2.com, or *.apps1.contoso-apps.com and *.apps2.contoso-apps.com, for example.
