Write a piece of software that goes beyond the trivial assignment.
Eventually, you will write something on the order of a scheduler and a
filesystem in your OS course. Before that you will hopefully write

and design through demo and release. After you have learned some
theory, you should take a course in compiler design. Learn to
*implement* the language. *Nothing* will teach you more about a
language than implementing a compiler for it.

In many ways the languiage is the second step on the trail. Learn some basic
programming but then look at programming well outside a language.

I also like:_
