I have gotten as far as I can with the CSS only design and I am absolutely delighted! I have two persistent problems and haven''t found answers in various searches so I am back, hat in hand.
First, I have a #bottommenulink with attributes for a and a:hover that are identical to the general text attributes in #bottommenu except for text-size, font-variant, color and text-decoration (for hover). All margins and alignments are the same BUT this little chunk of menu refuses to center on the page. Initially, it was all one div but I thought having a separate div for the link part would help. It didn''t.
Next are the gaps between the divs. I am at a loss how to fill them in so there are nifty stripes running through the layout.
And last, but probably not least, I need the layout to remain static regardless of the browser window size. As it is, my banner image stays put - everything else compresses which ends up looking kind of... odd, to say the least.
Maybe I like CSS so much because it''s like a puzzle to solve! Much more fun than wrestling tables!!!

I have 1 tip for you, I don''t know which broswer you use for designing but if it happened to be Firefox then you get the DOM Inspector (you may get this in Opera and Moz and Netscape to for all I know).
It is available off the tools menu and basically it displays a list of all the HTML elements on the left hand side (in tree form) and on the right hand side it displays various things which include (usefully) the style rules being applied to the element and the over all computed style (that is the results of adding the applicable style rules to the defaults) for the element.
It also handily flashes a red box round the element as you select it in the tree.

I use FireFox for my browser and check in IE. I also have Safari available but I have never even seen Opera! I suppose I ought to make an effort to work on that one, too!
I did poke the button on the DOM inspector but I had no idea what I was seeing. I''ll try again with that extra information.
And apologies for forgetting the links! I thought them very hard and figured you would sense them telepathically.
